Did you know that in the seventies NASA launched a few spaceships to explore and attempt communication with aliens? It’s true! This was the Voyager program, which is actually still active.
This exploration of space was to obtain information about our solar system but was bundled up with a bunch of music and 116 images intended on “explaining” our world. What an obligation! You know the beginning of Prometheus when robotic Michael Fassbender is sending out transmissions about the culture of Earth? That’s exactly what the Voyagers are doing but in an adorable 1970s way. The photos included are quite a mishmash, too. There are scientific things like formulas and human reproduction models in addition to nature scenes and photographs depicting modern life. There are a lot of things that try to bundle us and our experiences up without the baggage of war, crime, disease, poverty, religion, etc.: it’s the essence of humanity at its best.
But the images shot into space were taken before 1977. That’s almost forty years ago! So much shit has happened between now and then and, while we could probably put millions of photos onto a new Golden Record, there are some fundamental elements of contemporary life that should be shared with aliens. I have a few ideas, too. Here are 16 more photos that I think we should send to aliens to express the human experience right now. Live long and prosper, Voyager dudes!
