Did You Know Avocados Are A Gay Fruits?

Here’s a story that I love to tell myself.

My aunt once worked with a group of child singers. One of the kids in the group was from the South and her father was a fairly conservative Christian man who didn’t like things getting too out of hand or liberal. At one business meeting with the parents of the singers, my aunt had prepared a Mexican spread that included salsa, tortilla chips, quesadillas, and guacamole. It’s a fairly standard Californian feast. When the man walked in, my aunt performed the role of a good host and offered him some food. “No, thanks,” he said. “I don’t want any of that gay fruit.”

He was referring to the guacamole. This story pops into my head every time I eat an avocado or make guacamole because, as I have heard, there is a gay connection if you are a man who eats this “gay fruit.”

I never thought to look it up but I did recently and the results are great. According to the extremely reputable and absolutely not fake site Today I Found Out, “avocado” derives from a word meaning “testicle.” Bonus: “guacamole” somehow can link you to the meaning “testicle sauce” because “mole” means “sauce.” According to some slang thinkers, “avocado” is reported to refer to straight acting gay dudes, too.

The word Avocado comes from a Nahuatl Indian (Aztec) word “ahuácatl” meaning testicle. It is thought that the reference is either due to the avocado’s shape or the fact that it was considered to possess aphrodisiac qualities by the Aztecs. In Spanish, “ahuácatl” became “aguacate” and eventually “avogato” and then “avocado”. In English, the fruit was first described as an “Avagato pear” because of its pear-like shape. Later it also became known as an “alligator pear” given the alligator-like appearance to the skin. Over time, the term Avocado became the common word used to describe the fruit in English.

If you want to get more serious with this definition, Online Etymology Dictionary emphasizes the testicular tissue. To get things even more real, avocados are sometimes shaped like dicks. They are gay fruit—or at least masculine fruit.

For this week’s Cultural Knowledge Of Things You Already Knew About But Didn’t Know, avocados mean testicles so men eating avocados are a little gay because they are eating a fruit associated with balls. This is great news. No wonder I love making Mexican food. No wonder I live in California. Avocado me, avocado you.
